Upper Darby Summer Stage Set Sail With How I Became A Pirate
Upper Darby Summer Stage invites audiences to journey out to sea with How I Became A Pirate! With performances on July 27th, 28th, & 29th at 10:30am and July 28th at 7:00pm, this Summer Stage classic is the adventure-filled story of a boy who longs to be a pirate.
How I Became A Pirate is part of this year’s series of family-friendly, hour-long shows presented by Upper Darby Summer Stage’s Children’s Theatre program. Tickets range from $10 - $14 and may be purchased online any time at www.udsummerstage.org or by calling the Box Office at 610.814.7270 during office hours on Monday–Thursday from 1pm-4pm. The Upper Darby Performing Arts Center is located at 601 N. Lansdowne Avenue in Drexel Hill, just minutes from the Main Line and Center City. Parking is free. Masks are suggested but not required.
In How I Became A Pirate, Captain Braid Beard (Aidan Dougherty of Essington) and his pirate crew search for the perfect place to bury their treasure. Along the way, they are joined by young Jeremy Jacob (Norah Kneafsey of Havertown). The aspiring buccaneer learns to “talk like a pirate”, helps them on their quest, and teaches them that there are more treasures to be had than those that can be found on a map.
Director Ali Caiazzo says “How I Became a Pirate is like an hour long dream sequence; I like to think of it as a dream you'd have while napping on the beach down the shore. The audience will get pulled into this dream, and… even get to interact with the pirates in the theater!” She continues, “Our cast and audience alike will hunt for the treasure and learn that while it is fun to sail the seven seas, sometimes the best part of an adventure is returning to your own home.” Audience members are welcome to come dressed as their favorite pirate and sally forth on the adventure.
This sense of connectedness is reflected not only in the characters on stage, but within the cast as well. Brenna Lill, who plays Pirate Scurvy Dog, says, “There is such a wonderful sense of community and family in this cast, which proves to be the greatest treasure of all.”
Upper Darby Summer Stage is incredibly grateful to partner with Casey’s Restaurant to sponsor How I Became A Pirate. Upper Darby Summer Stage would also like to thank its season sponsor, Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School, for their support. Summer Stage 2022 is also supported through sponsor and host, Upper Darby School District, as well as founding sponsor, Upper Darby Township.
